[Pharmacological action] Pharmacodynamics Iron is the main component of hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin is the main oxygen carrier in red blood cells. Myoglobin is the storage site of muscle cells for oxygen to help the muscle supply oxygen needs during exercise. Most enzymes and factors involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle contain iron or function only in the presence of iron. "Therefore, after active supplementation of iron to iron-deficient animals, in addition to accelerated hemoglobin synthesis, the symptoms associated with tissue iron deficiency and reduced activity of iron-containing enzymes, such as growth retardation, abnormal behavior, and lack of physical strength, are gradually corrected."
Pharmacokinetics Iron is absorbed more rapidly by injection than by oral administration; The plasma concentration of iron dextran reached its peak at 24-48 hours after intramuscular injection. The larger molecular weight of iron dextran was absorbed through lymphatic vessels and then transferred into blood, and the plasma concentration increased slowly. After intravenous or intramuscular injection, it is absorbed into the blood circulation and phagocytosed and decomposed into iron and dextran by the monocyte-phagocyte system. After absorption, iron ions are oxidized to ferric ions by ceruloplasmin in blood, which then bind to transferrin receptors and enter cells in the form of pinocytosis for use by hematopoietic cells. Iron ions can also accumulate in the form of ferritin or hemosiderin in the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and other monocyte-phagocyte systems. Protein-binding rates are high in hemoglobin, low in myoglobin, enzymes, and iron-transporting proteins, and very low in ferritin or hemosiderin.

[Usage and dosage] Intramuscular injection: a dose, foal, calf 2-6ml; 1 ~ 2ml for piglets; Puppy 0.2-2ml; Fox 0.5-2ml; Mink 0.3 ~ lml.
[Adverse reactions] Piglets injected with iron occasionally suffer from instability in standing due to muscle weakness, which can cause death in severe cases.

(2) Intramuscular injection can cause local pain, so it should be injected deep into the muscle.
(3) In pigs more than 4 weeks of age, it can cause discolour of buttock muscles.
